the Gritty Birds Podcast is back with a new X-Ray show

The lovely Ms. Jeni Wren Stottrup is bringing her top rated music and industry podcast (a "Top 5 Music Podcast" by the Willamette Week) back for all our ears to enjoy once again. Starting TODAY at 1pm, Stottrup brings the Gritty Birds Podcast to KXRY XRay FM with half hour spurts of intimate discussions involving those in the music scene, profiling newer bands and getting better acquainted with some of the older ones.

Kicking off the revived podcast right, the first episode features former Portlanders YACHT, who aside from being one of the most enjoyed performances at last month's Treefort Music Festival, also have two sold out shows coming up at the Roseland Theater on April 25th and 26th with M83.

Speaking of Treefort, Gritty Birds will also launch a Treefort series, featuring artists who performed the fest like Burger Records' Sarah Bethe Nelson, our own beloved Radiation City and raw rockers Diarrhea Planet, among others. Film photos of the artists, shot by Ingrid Renan, will accompany the series.

Tune in today at 1pm, and follow the show every Thursday. Episodes will be available on iTunes the following Mondays.

The Hunt is On: Record Store Day 2015

Record Store Day is on Saturday—the best day of the year to stand in line and fight over rare vinyl releases while supporting local businesses. This year, Portland record stores will stock hundreds of RSD exclusive releases, including some local treats.

In October, Blitzen Trapper recorded Neil Young’s Harvest in full at the Doug Fir. Score the live album Live Harvest on Saturday. Listen to their take on “Heart of Gold” before you buy the record.

Eyelids, Portland’s psych-pop super group, are releasing a split 7” with The Phoenix Foundation, produced by Peter Buck.

Pickathon partnered with Easy Sound Recording Company to release a split 7” of Those Darlins and Diarrhea Planet (both from Nashville) recorded live at the festival last summer. Preview the tracks here.

Jackpot Records is releasing a limited edition record of short-lived Portland band No. 2’s No Memory. Mixed by Elliott Smith, the album is “the missing link between the end of Heatmiser and the beginning of Elliott Smith’s major label debut,” according to Jackpot.

In store performances abound throughout the day. Everyday Music on the Westside will feature DJ sets by members of Typhoon, Modern Kin, Laura Veirs, Summer Cannibals, and more, plus performances by Edna Vasquez, Ryan Sollee (Builders and the Butchers), Sam Coomes (Quasi), The Shivas, The Ghost Ease, The Ganders, and the Dandy Warhols. See the full schedule here.

Tender Loving Empire will host an officially unofficial RSD party at their SE Hawthorne store featuring Genders, Ali Muhareb, and Run On Sentence.

Jackpot will pour you free coffee if you peruse their shop or stop in for their DJ sets.

Across town, Music Millennium will host Portland punk legends, Dead Moon.

Make sure you check out early opening times for your favorite record store, and study the release list ahead of time.

Happy Record Store Day!

Diarrhea Planet "Platinum Girls"

Okay, at this point Diarrhea Planet is hanging on the "Emerged" side of the playground, but we couldn't resist posting this music video that premiered on NYLON last Friday. It just feels so good to have some local riff-raff on a national stage. "Platinum Girls" will be on their upcoming EP "Aliens in the Outfield," due to be released November 18th.  While it's shot at the original Pete and Pete house and features the Mr. Tastee of our dreams, our favorite part is the drummer's GBV t-shirt.  Because the devil is in the details.  -Terra James-Jura

Best of 2013 Poll for Emerging Nashville Artists: FINAL RESULTS!

Deli Nation,

Our Year End Poll for Emerging Nashville Artists was - as usual - a painstaking (and somewhat excruciating) process, but we pulled it off with remarkable flair!

Kudos to phenomenal punks Diarrhea Planet (pictured) for winning it, and to lo-fi riot grrrl Bully and mellow folksters Great Peacock for placing 2nd and third - we are very happy with this top 3, more gems are hidden in the list below, theough, check it out!

Here's how it all went down: first, we let the local bands submit their music (for free), and got our Deli editors to pick the nominees. Then we polled a list of 15+ Nashville scene expert (our jury, list at the bottom) and asked them to nominate 3 more bands of their choice each. Then we polled our writers, then we polled our readers. We tried to keep things open for each single genre, from Indie Rock to Roots Music to Hip Hop.

If you are a geek interested in all the subtelties related to how this poll works, you can read its rules here (happy reading!). But if all you care about is the awesome new music Nashville produced in the year 2013, this list is all you need. Enjoy!

Diarrhea Planet releases "I'm Rich Beyond Your Wildest Dreams"

This Nashville band has been a topic of conversation on several music blogs lately. With their recent CD release show at Exit/In this past Saturday, the local band brought much hype from the streets of Elliston and surrounding Nashville areas. The young rockers caused quite the sensational ruckus at the local venue. Even with musicians such as Bruno Mars and Fitz and the Tantrums to compete with on Saturday night, DP (Diarrhea Planet) was able to fill up the venue. The show was everything to be expected and then some of the unexpected. The group of six showed hints of old school legends Van Halen, The Ramones, Jack Black, KISS, and the Strokes while shaking it up and causing a riot. Their much-anticipated album entitled I’m Rich Beyond Your Wildest Dreams is due out August 20th via Infinity Cat. Although purchasing their album will expose you to their raw and wild talent, nothing can compare with that of seeing this thrilling gang shred their guitars in a live setting. - Maria Hartfield
