Leave it to Gold Casio to breathe some life back into this tired day of mildly holy appreciation. A particular appreciation of theirs (and anyone else that relishes surf music's pioneers) revolves around the Beach Boys, their opus Pet Sounds and everything that they've done for music in general.

Since 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of Pet Sounds' release, Gold Casio have used their psychedelic disco elements to cover the most relatable Side two song on Pet Sounds, "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times." 

On their choice to cover "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" specifically, Gold Casio's Brock Grenfell said:

We wound up choosing this particular song because its got great melodies and it was kind of just resonating with us. Honestly, after what a shit-show year 2016 has ended up being, I feel like it's pretty appropriate. I think a lot of people probably feel right now like they weren't made for the times we're living in. 

SO. MUCH. TRUTH. See Gold Casio play for Do503 at the beginning of the new year with Glasys and Holidae House at Holocene but until then, enjoy their dance pop take on a Beach Boys' classic.

For a band fairly recent in its development, Arrows in Orbit already have a good grasp on what it takes to blend prog rock with classic folk in an uniquely emotive way. The four-piece encompasses diverse members from assorted corners of the world, with each of their different backgrounds adding nonpareil factions to a musical style led by lead singer and songwriter Hunter Paye.

Arrows in Orbit's definitive style is clearly expressed on the track we're premiering today, "The New You." The first song Paye wrote upon acquiring his first electric guitar, "The New You" is refined, promising more solid releases from the rest of the Blueprints for Flight EP and the band in general.

The single release show for "The New You" will be November 16 at the Liquor Store as part of The Secret Sea's newest album release and an accompanying set from Glasys. Tickets are $7 with the show starting at 9pm.

Today we're premiering the third single from The Secret Sea's U.S. debut and 7th album, Everest, which was recorded and mixed by Larry Crane of Jackpot! Studios.

His previous singles "Army of Souls" and "Canada" opened the door to the intimate confines of Amit Erez's soft acoustic world, but it's the thoughtful lyrics and imagery of "My Beautiful Hell" that takes us further and deeper into the revelation of his story.

Steadily rolling forward in a lush full-band arrangement, this song is the journey of a protagonist through his past and present, reflecting on events that shaped his life as an artist and as a person with haunting visuals and metaphors. Lyrically heavy, "My Beautiful Hell" pulls the listener into a hallucination, questioning the perceptions of home, happiness, and the endless chase after one's own calling. 

The track also features guest musicians Gil Assayas of GLASYS on keys and former Elliott Smith and current Eyelids drummer Paul Pulvirenti. 

Amit will be joined by a full band for the first time onstage for the album release show for Everest, taking place at the Liquor Store on November 16th. The show will also be a single release for Arrows in Orbit, along with a performance from GLASYS.

Limited edition cassettes with download codes from Dazzleships Records will also be sold at the show and Everest will be digitally available on all known platforms on Nov 15th, with a pre-order on iTunes from Nov 12th.

For tonight's Saturday Night Sounds, we're blasting two singles off Glasys' September release The Pressure. 

A master at the keys, Portland by way of Tel Aviv, Isreal instrumentalist Gil Assayas shares animated vocals with faultless keyboard and synth playing to make jazzy electronic you can't help but dance to.

Give a go to Glasys' title track and the very Halloweeny and socially commentating music video for "The Great Abyss." While you're at it, plan on checking out his set at Kelly's Olympian on the October 11th with Vancouver's The Yacolt Burn and Seattle's General Mojo's.

A couple months ago, the Secret Sea dominated and won a round of the Deli Portland's Artist of the Month poll. We're now pleased to share the Secret Sea's newest single "Army Of Souls" and the release show in support of it, which happens to be kicking off his month long foray along the West Coast and beyond.

Relocating to Portland from Tel Aviv, Amit Erez, the Secret Sea's main vein, throws himself deeply into his songwriting with an uninhibited beatific expression. Each track finds the listener more closely connecting with Erez as an artist on an emotional level and "Army Of Souls" is no different.

First premiering on Next Northwest this last Thursday, "Army Of Souls" is yet another song showcasing Erez's ability to delicately tug at your internal strings with an Elliot Smith-ian sort of mastery. 

A single release show for "Army Of Souls" will be TONIGHT at the Turn! Turn! Turn! along with two Boston artists, Annabelle Lord-Patey and Matt Minigell, and fellow Portland solo artist GLASYS, who also provided keyboards on the Secret Sea's track.
