Local record label and boutique music agency Marmoset specializes in seeking out some of the most talented acts and songs ranging from the timeless and rare to the emerging and engaging. Their latest endeavor, the Transference compilation LP, focuses particularly on songs lesser unknown and possibly forgotten.

In making Transference, Marmoset's producers combined through the public domain for songs 100 years old and up. As they developed their extensive collection, they invited a series of artists join in on reimagining and rerecording some of these tracks. Marmoset's team worked closely with the participating artists in evolving each track from its original beauty to a newly fashioned merit.

Some of the artists featured on Transference include Ural Thomas and the Pain doing a soulfully rhythmic rendition of "Hot Time in the Old Town," originally recorded in 1896, The Helio Sequence's vision of the Bing Crosby-recorded standard "Down Among the Sheltering Palms" as "Out Among the Sheltering Pines," and an electronic interpretation of Eugene Lockhart and Ernest Seitz 1919 classic "The World is Waiting for the Sunrise" done by Distance and Frankie Simone.

What Marmoset has managed to create is an anthology of imaginative appreciation, showcasing a history of imaginative talent and musicianship. Dive into the 10 tracks on Transference below.

With modest beginnings as a DIY YouTube recording teen, New Jersey's Mree's songs and videos made her an (almost) instant internet success story. Her production and pop sensibilities have the potential to expand her audience far beyond the Folk scene. Thursday night at Spike Hill we'll have a really fun AND interesting bill with a lot of talented artists dedicated to bringing roots music in new directions. The very young and talented songwriter Mree - a recent Deli artist of the month - has been gathering a lot of buzz with her ethereal songs and impeccable home made recordings and videos, which got hundreds of thousands of views; don't miss her show at 9pm. As artsy as Mree, but slightly more upbeat and soulful, The Stationary Set have become a mainstay of the Brooklyn scene and will showcase their artsy soul-pop at 10.30. Julian Fulton and the Zombie Gospel will surely be happy to be sandwiched between these two artists; this band plays rootsy pop with psychedelic tinges - we are very curious to see them live. NZ imports Streets of Laredo (pictured) will keep faith to their mission of charming Newyorkers one by one with their contagious alt country, while Derrick & The Black Sea and Great Elk will open and close the night with their intense songs flirting with Americana and alt rock.

Mree's delicate voice and intimate songs have a resonating power that caught the attention of none other than mister Bon Iver. The "king of mellowness" recently shared Mree's music with his fans, creating quite a bit of buzz around this young artist. Quite impressively, this talented nineteen year old songstress and full-time NYU music student not only records and produces her own music, but also films and edits her videos (see them here). She plans to release her sophomore album, "Winterwell," on August 6. The album's first single, “Into the Well” (streaming below) features a long ethereal intro reminiscent of Enya's seas of sound, and then develops into a mid tempo electro-pop lullaby. It works. Once a cover-artist, recreating versions of tracks from Bon Iver and The Middle East, Mree seems to have found her own sound along the way. - Kristyn Potter
