Poppies

Q&A with Poppies, see them live at Mercury on 10.09

Poppies have managed to gain a generous following with their introspective, melodic sound. Singer/guitarist May's childlike, delicate vocals, perfectly blend with the band's enigmatic, dreamy instrumentals. The quartet recently unveiled a new video for single 'Devin' (streaming below). Our friends at Delicious Audio wanted to dig in to the band's sound and story, you can read the Q&A at the link below. Their next show is at Mercury Lounge on October 9th.

Poppies celebrate EP release party at The Glove on 06.09

Poppies have managed to gain a generous following with their introspective, melodic sound and singer May's childlike, delicate vocals. After debuting their very first "Double Single" featuring the tracks "Egghead" and "Mistakes," and the release of the subsequent "Told," the band is ready to finally debut lengthier work. On June 9th, they will be joined by BRNDA, Dougie Poole and Vas Deferens, for an exciting release party at The Glove, hosted by comedienne Gina Ginsberg. This gig will also be the kickoff of the band's upcoming tour, which will see them take their emotionally-charged, languid ballads all across the North East. Catch their latest release below, the video for "Mistakes," a soulful, nostalgic explosion into the New York transit nightlife. - Valentina Roja

(Adorable) band on the rise: Poppies play Sunnyvale tonight (01.17), Baby's on 02.01

The name of NYC's quartet Poppies is extremely appropriate, considering those flowers' sleep (and high) inducing qualities - as all rock'n'rollers should know, all opioids like morphine, heroine and a slew of painkillers derive from poppy seeds. Both sleepy and dreamy, this band's soothing, melancholic ballads feature the gentle and youthful voice of May Rio, and a tendency to find inspiration in old time pop melodies that's somewhat reminiscent of Mitski (check out streaming single Eggheads in this regard). Their music video for “Told,” which features a man in a dog costume and an old lady resenting him, give us an example of their more "hallucinogenic" side. The quartet has a string of local shows scheduled, culminating with a show at Baby's All Right on 02.01 with Baked and Soft Fangs (they'll be also playing at Sunnyvale tonight 01.17).

Gigawatts mag going out with a bang (and many bands) @ Alphaville on May 14/15

1.21 Gigawatts - a Brooklyn DIY magazine that did a great job of covering the scene's punky, garagey and psych emerging bands - is sadly closing and it will be gracing us one final time with their hosting skills come this weekend at Alphaville. With Deli favorites like Dead Stars, HaybabyDances, and 11 more taking the stage we can expect a weekend of great music and spectacular shows. On top of getting 14 amazing bands performing in two days, it’s all just $10. Insane, right? It is always with a heavy heart that we must say goodbye, but Gigawatts really knows how to go out with a bang (and how to give you more bang for your buck). So head on over to Alphaville this Saturday and Sunday for some memorable performances. Check out the playlist below to get a feeling of what you’ll be listening. - Adriana Ballester
