The Ugly Club

The Deli/Balcony TV show at Brooklyn Bowl with The Ugly Club, Modern Rivals, Ava Luna, Vensaire

Admit it, most Tuesday nights you don’t have any plans. The Deli is here to change that. We’re teaming up with BalconyTV Brooklyn to give you something fun to do on a Tuesday, and we’re bringing out - if not the big ones - some damn charming guns. We’ve got the airy avant-pop of Vensaire, indie rockers The Ugly Club, Modern Rivals own brand of indie dream pop, and the alternative soul of Ava Luna. This is going to be a show full of experimental sounds and great performances. So come and join us tonight (April 30th) at Brooklyn Bowl from 8pm-Midnight, and give yourself something to look forward to in the middle of the week. Facebook event here. - Lucy Sherman

NYC bands on the rise: The Ugly Club plays The Studio on 01.25

New Jersey psych rockers The Ugly Club (who placed 4th in our recent Psych Rock submissions to our Best of 2012 poll) stand out from the pack of guitar drone peers by placing sonic emphasis on keyboards (and - at times - horns). Their sound is less noisy, at times even borderline folky, with clearly understood vocals and lyrics delivered more emotionally than many of this genre’s counterparts. “Loosen Up” maintains ‘psych’ elements within a more structured pop format, allowing the aforementioned keyboard textures to provide improvisational patterns. “Under The Great Wave” (streaming) pulses with a heart-tugging pathos, adding trumpets and falsetto vocals to the mix, further contributing to the tracks sentimentally grandiose feeling. The band this week will be at the Railhouse in Rahway, NJ on the 19th, and then at The Studio at Webster on January 25th. - Dave Cromwell

The Ugly Club releases debut LP + plays The Studio on 08.17

After two strong EPs, the hardest-working band in New Jersey has just put out their first full-length ‘You Belong to the Minutes.’ Make no mistake, The Ugly Club have big goals in mind. Why else would they be busking around Austin and outside Fed Ex stores around the East Coast? Unless they’re crazy, which I guess is also possible. Their new single ‘Unravelling You’ is filled with an eerie sense of unease, like something is lying on the wings, about to take over. And when it does take over in the hook, an even more unexpected thing happens. Singer Ryan Egan’s vocals deliver a warmth that puts things right back together again. With a sound this ambitious, it’s amazing how simple the band makes it all feel.

Recorded at Rough Magic Studios with engineer Alby Cohen (Mos Def, Talib Kweli), ‘You Belong to the Minutes’ is a large-scale statement from a band just beginning to throw their weight around. Check them out August 17 at The Studio at Webster Hall. - Mike Levine(@Goldnuggets)
